I just did a quick look in Amazon.ca ( ca not com) and used the key words Silvery Slocan, Kootenays, and Barkerville and found a number of books some you can down load others you would have to order. Mid 1800's the area I live in the West Kootenays did have Huson Bay men come through and set up a couple of small outposts but the activities never started here untill after the 1850's and then exploded when silver was found late in the 1800's. The Hudson Bay Company were in BC long before the railway came as was a little mining so when you look up the history of the white man settling on BC you will find it is relatively new. There were two main ecemomical reason BC was settled the western terminus of the CPR in Vancover and Mining. There are a lot of books on the History of BC that you can't download, some you can. I don't think they are downloadable though: The Dear Canada books (young adults) by Scholastic might be a possibility. You also need to read about Emily Carr of Victoria. You also need to know the name of Alice Munro (1931 - ) whose ex-husband John Munro lately passed on his namesake bookstore in Victoria on Government Street to his staff.

Other Canadian authors of some significance write about other things, like Margaret Atwood, Carol Shields and Michael Ondaatje - who wrote The English Patient.

For non-fiction some of our iconic authors who wrote about Canada are Farley Mowat (1921 - 2014) and Pierre Berton (1920-2004). The above thread was developed a couple of years ago for fiction in BC.
